Tech Briefing: Tesla & Autopilot

When it comes to cars and autonomous driving, few have been able to set the industry standard quite like Tesla has. With their Autopilot capability, Tesla vehicles are able to completely drive themselves, and claim to even be able to operate better than a human can when it comes to safety. What makes their self-driving capabilities so unique is the technology that they pack into them, specifically Eight surround cameras provide 360 degrees of visibility around the car at up to 250 meters of range. Twelve updated ultrasonic sensors complement this vision, allowing for detection of both hard and soft objects at nearly twice the distance of the prior system. A forward-facing radar with enhanced processing provides additional data about the world on a redundant wavelength that is able to see through heavy rain, fog, dust and even the car ahead (Tesla). In addition, the cars can always be updated via over the air software updates, so new features can always be continuously added and improved to make the self-driving experience that much better.

When stacked up against the competition, Tesla ranks king every time, for the time being. Car and Driver did a comparison between the Tesla Model S P85D, BMW 750i xDrive, Mercedes Benz S65 AMG, and Infiniti Q50S, in which the Tesla blazed past the competition. They found that The Tesla’s Autosteer performance can be distinguished from our other contenders by two words: no wobbling. This car identifies the exact center of your lane of travel and holds that course with minimal deviation. This system rises well above parlor-trick status to beg your use in daily driving (Car and Driver). With this finding, it is clear that the Autopilot features that are built into each Tesla are more than just a party trick, it is the future and direction in which autonomous driving needs to be heading.

One of the biggest hurdles facing self-vehicles today is the government regulations that they have to overcome to become compliant in each state. While we are still a few short years off before seeing fully autonomous vehicles on the road due to those regulations, it is exciting to see how the future of driving is going to be changing.

What are your thoughts on the future of driving and fully autonomous vehicles? Are you for or against it? What features would you like to see as available options in a self-driving car?

  1. Hi Ryan,

I have always loved Tesla and I think it's amazing that they have been able to stay ahead of their competition like they have. It's never been a close call, they have always been a leader in the industry.

I think what they are doing with autonomous driving is pretty cool. I don't know if I'm ready for fully autonomous cars, but I think it's definitely beneficial to have the capabilities that some of their cars have. I also honestly don't know if I would be ready to get into a fully autonomous car and trust it even though I know they put a lot of money and testing into their technology, it's just a huge change from what we are used to!

  2. Hello Ryan,

I am always a supporter of self-driving car because I believe the manual-driving car will be replaced eventually with the improvement of human beings' overall productivity. However, in recent decades, autonomous vehicles are limited by not only government regulation but also the technology. Since this kind of vehicles need extremely accurate route design and the appropriate angle to make a turn, etc, developers will launch multiple investigations on even a single block of a city.

One of the pioneers, Uber's self-driving vehicles in Pittsburgh, allows people to use iPad to design routes, satisfying various customers' desires, which is super cool. When I was in Pittsburgh, I was amazed by the high adaptability that the vehicles had to the real-world traffic.

I would love to see more ingenious decision-making functions to be installed in self-driving vehicles so that customers who always experience complex traffic can also easily design routes.

  3. Hi Ryan,

Wow! It is incredible that technology has come this far. We may not have flying cars, but self-driving ones are pretty amazing as well. This is an interesting topic and I am curious to see how it develops in the coming years and decades.

I think if the technology is tested and proven to be vastly efficient in a wide range of driving scenarios, this could be a useful and acceptable technology. The scary truth is that there are many crazy and/or terrible human drivers out there and I would probably trust a self-driving car more than many of them. I have little doubts that these cars will be able to drive perfectly, but what concerns me is there ability to react to the imperfect driving of others around them. These cars cannot have human instincts (or can they?). For instance, what if on the highway the car next to it changes lanes into it? What does the self-driving car do? How does it evaluate what to do and how quickly could it do that? Would it hit the brakes and risk being rear-ended or would it detect that there is a car too close behind them to do that? Would it honk the horn to make the other car aware of what they are doing? Would it move over and risk hitting a car in the other lane or could it quickly detect there is one there? This is only one situation but there are others where I would be concerned the car could not react appropriately as a human may be able to. Would these cars anticipate these rare situations that could cause an accident? For this reason, I would probably be skeptical to sit in a self-driving car and not have control over it, but I don't think I would have a problem with driving along-side them.

I imagine there will be an immense amount of rules and regulations regarding autonomous vehicles and it may be a while before we see them in full use around us. Once in use, however, I can see them for several uses. They have the potential to be used for private transportation, truck drivers, school buses, public transportation, and so on.
