Tech Briefing: Qualcomm Biometric Patches

Recently, Qualcomm released new biometric patches for the healthcare industry. With these new patches, they can capture real-time data from motions or temperature. Qualcomm is also partnering with Benchmark Electronics to manufacture the patches according to FDA standards. Also, according to the article, these patches are “low-power, cost-effective, and single-use”, which will make healthcare more “proactive” and “intelligent” care.

The patches were developed using Qualcomm’s 2Net Design platform. This platform helps create the electronic modules for health systems and devices such as disposable medical diagnostic and drug delivery devices. It also helps push innovation in the healthcare industry.

Overall, the idea of these biometric patches is interesting, considering the single-use aspect of them. Do you have any thoughts on this?

  1. Interesting article Kevin. My question is where all this data is stored and what is it used for? Also what applications can you see this being used for?

    1. Looking further into it, the patches will probably integrate with the 2net Platform from Qualcomm Life, which uses cloud-based storage. They said the data is used for monitoring patients to make better decisions.

I imagine looking at stress levels as an application, which could branch further into psychological health.

  2. Hi Kevin,

Good article. I think this is a nice innovation. Actually, the use aspect of the patches is depends on what type and level of the "motion" can they measure right now. If they are able to measure specific motion in a certain area like ankle, it can be used to detect the patient's recovery process. With a sophisticated tech on the patch, psychological healthcare is also a good aspect to develop.

  3. Hi Kevin,

Interesting article. Since the patches retrieve data to make healthcare better, is it assumed that patients will have to purchase them? Especially since they are single-use, wouldn't this add up and become another health cost that people must account for? Or perhaps it would go under health insurance? Great job!

  4. Interesting idea from Qualcomm. I recently read an other article that is related to this idea involving smart bandages. These are currently being tested in various universities. The bandages have medicine to promote either pain relief or even have growth hormones to promote healing. The medicine would be released when prompted by an app, timer, or sensor.

It seems like smart patches/bandages are becoming more of a trend with the possibilities to increase technology solutions in the healthcare industry.

  5. I think the idea of biometric patches are really cool. I think health conscious people would love this product not only because its cool to know whats going on in your body, but also could help shine light on possible diseases or problems. I think its revolutionary for people that need to measure glucose levels, blood pressure, etc. and will save many lives in the future.

  6. Hi Kevin!

I have been seeing a lot of new things going on at Qualcomm lately. The healthcare field needs cutting edge technology like this to help hospitals be more effective and efficient so they can save more lives. The fact that a patch can do all these things such as detect a patient's temperature or even their movements is beyond me.
My only thoughts on the idea are will the hospital provide them for every patient? Or how will it be determined who gets to wear a patch and who doesn't? Or do the patients buy the patches? What are the initial costs in the short term? Will insurance matter?
